Marigold, in the family of Asteraceae, Science named Tagetes spp, the recorded history of marigold had begun in Mexico and middle of America, where the flowering plant was used in religious ceremonies and as an herbal medicine. The flowers had spread around the world and had imported to grow in Thailand since when, there is no exact reporting.

   During 1976-1979, Kasetsart University had been received research funding by through Agricultural project to establish and operate the research project on crops and wild plants of Northen areas. This researched on cultivated crops and wild plants for Dye Production in the Highlands of Northen Thailand. Marigold was a plant that had been selected. The marigold seeds had been planted experimentally varieties at royal Agricultural Research Station(Ang kang) Chiang Mai Province and had been plant on bedding plot in the Department of Horticulture, Kasetsart University, in order to analyze carotene and xanthophylls in fresh flowers and dried flowers.

   During the year 1979-1981, despite the end of the plant research, Professor Sompiean Kasemsap and his researchers also continued to conduct researching on technologies for production of marigolds in various forms.    In February 1983, on the National Agriculture day for the first time there had been a demonstration of planting marigold at Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen to farmers and the general public in experiences. There was also published the guides to plant marigold to the public at event and had begun to grow marigold in cut off flowers group for trading seriously since then, farmer had dubbed this marigold as “ Daoruanng-kaset ” or marigro agro to honor the Kasetsart University since that time.
